The holidays are filled with goodies, parties and most likely office potlucks. Mister had one just the other day, and while I was planning to bake him a cake, two things decided to derail that plan… Continue reading

Eggnog ~ The Drink of the Holiday

Image

There isn’t a real story to this recipe. Mister wanted eggnog, but he prefers something more natural and less sweet than the stuff you get at the store, so I made some homemade eggnog because it is only the best thing to have this time of the year. Although… I am pretty sure he was jealous that all the baked goods I was making were going to other people.

You would also think eggnog is difficult to make, but honestly, it’s pretty easy, especially if you know how to temper egg yolks. I actually made a huge batch of eggnog at the same time I baked these sugar cookies. Here is a quick Youtube tutorial on how to temper egg yolks -> Better Homes Gardening Tempering Egg Yolk Tutorial . This is crucial to making eggnog, but it’s really easy. I prefer to ladle all the milk slowly in to the eggs though, because I don’t want to risk the eggs curdling. Shortbread Cookies (Modern Recipe) + understanding flour in shortbread

Shortbread cookies

Shortbread cookies

I can’t imagine the Holidays without shortbread. If someone isn’t making them, I will buy them, many times. I don’t care if they are the cheap kind or the delicious Mary Macleod’s, shortbread is so simple to make that I have yet to eat one, dense or thin, that didn’t taste good.

After reading up on the history of shortbread, I decided to make some. I figured I couldn’t fail too hard at making a cookie with 3 ingredients. With a bit of research I decided that I would use 4 ingredients, which really doesn’t change much.  Well to some it is a big deal. When you read extensively on shortbread, you begin to notice the fight between what are considered “traditional” and “non -traditional” shortbread recipes. Continue reading
